COUNTDOWN TO PARIS
US Men’s Rugby Sevens and US Men’s Soccer Team will be kicking off the Paris Olympics for Team USA on July 24, 2024.
Men’s Rugby starts off pool play in Stade de France (where 1998 World Cup took place) with prelim play as early as 9 AMET (they will play two games that day)
#USYNT Men will play France at 3:00 PMET Wednesday July 24 in Marseille, France.
Today’s Number: HOW MANY EVENTS WILL TEAM USA QUALIFY COMPETE IN PARIS?
263
Team USA has already qualified to send an athlete in 263 events for Paris 2024. Team USA should likely qualify in 3 events and will have to wait for reallocation in a few other events.
Team USA will likely participate in less events than Tokyo when they participated in 273 events in Tokyo but Tokyo had 339 events why Paris will only have 329 events 1
QUALIFICATION STATUS FOR TEAM USA
QUALIFIED (263 events)
LOCKS (3 events)
LIKELY OUT (2 events)
WILL NOT COMPETE BARRING REALLOCATION (61 events)
Updates:
US qualified in all events through Olympic Qualifier Series and 19 more athletes qualified to Team USA and directly to Paris given their rankings in the sport of breaking, sport climbing, BMX freestyle, and skateboarding.
Men’s Archery Team did not qualify - It is the first time ever since Archery re-entered the Olympics in 1972 (excluding 1980 Boycott) that Team USA does not send a men’s recurve team.
US did not qualify a spot in men’s air pistol. There is a chance Nick Mowrer could get a spot via reallocation but as of now he was not named to the USA Shooting team.
US did not qualify in a spot in men’s modern pentathlon for the first time since the Olympics started in 1912.
In Men’s Greco-Roman 77KG - Kamal Bey looks likely to qualify because AIN eligibility review by the IOC has not approved Russian Sergey Kutuzov’s eligibility.
LOCKS (5)
Athletics (3) Men’s Long Jump, Women’s Triple Jump, Men’s Javelin
Excluding the race walk events - These three track and field events Team USA does not yet have an athlete with the qualifying standard are these three events but should qualify via world rankings.
It looks like Team USA Track and Field should qualify a full team (3 athletes in each event) except for the race walking events. Three events to watch where Team USA will look for a third athlete to hit the standard or improve their ranking at trials to send a third athlete are men’s javelin, women’s javelin, and women’s high jump.
LIKELY OUT (2)
Athletics: Race Walk (2) Men’s and Women’s 20Km
Race Walk rankings are not looking particularly favorable for the United States at the moment to qualify an athlete via rankings or standard.
ALREADY ELIMINATED: EVENTS TEAM USA WILL NOT COMPETE(60)
Combat Sports account for 25 of the 60 events that Team USA will not compete in at Paris.
Judo (11) Boxing (5) Taekwondo (4) Wrestling (3) Fencing (2)
Taekwondo and Judo have a continental quota limit per nation that hurts Team USA’s chances to add more athletes in more events.
Boxing and Wrestling have limited chances to qualify only 3 tournaments (1 regional, 2 global) and do not use rankings.
Team USA also missed out on 13 of the 32 Canoe and Rowing events at the Paris Olympics.
That included Canoe/Kayak Sprint (7), Canoe/Kayak Slalom (2), Rowing (2).
Team USA also did not qualify in 8 events in Track Cycling. Adding up the Combat Sports, Canoe/Rowing, and Track Cycling account for 44 of 56 events2 that Team USA failed to qualify for in Paris 2024.
Archery (1) Men’s Archery Team does not qualify for first time since sport entered the Olympics in 1972. For continental qualification USA Archery used a different team than the top three finishers at U.S. Trials (because U.S. Trials were still ongoing) or the team that won PanAm Games gold and did not qualify in that event.
Athletics (1) First year of the Mixed 35KM Team Race Walk - you will not see Team USA in this event. Out of all the exciting mixed relays that World Athletics could have added (hurdles, distance medley, cross country)---World Athletics decided to add Race Walking!?!?
Boxing (5) Will not qualify in Men’s Lightweight, Men’s Light Heavyweight, Men’s Heavyweight, Women’s Bantamweight and Women’s Middleweight. 1st time since 1908 (excluding 1980 Boycott) - that Team USA will not send a boxer in Men’s Lightweight weight class after winning silver in Tokyo
Canoe/Kayak Sprint(7): Men’s Canoe C-1 1000M, Women’s Kayak K-1 500M, Men’s Canoe C-2 500M, Women’s Canoe C-2 500M, Women’s Kayak K-2 500M, Men’s & Women’s Kayak K-4 500M,
Canoe/Kayak Slalom (2) Men’s Kayak Cross and Men’s K-1Slalom
Team USA could be #4 on reallocation on men’s kayak slalom but likely will not a get a spot.
Cycling (8) Men’s and Women’s Keirin, Men’s and Women’s Team Sprint, Men’s and Women’s Sprint, Men’s Team Pursuit and Men’s Madison
Team USA Cycling will not send a man or woman in the Sprint competitions (Sprint, Keirin, Team Sprint) of Track Cycling for the first time since 1928. Women’s Sprint was one spot away in terms of reallocation it does seem doubtful because every nation has confirmed initial spot.
In terms of reallocation- Team USA is on the reallocation list in 5 of the 8 events
Women’s Sprint (R1)
Men’s Team Pursuit (R2)
Men’s Madison (R2)
Women’s Team Sprint (R4)
Women’s Keirin (R5)
Diving (1) Men’s Synchro 10M Platform. After David Boudia led Team USA to a back to back Olympic medals in this event… Team USA has now gone back to back Olympics without qualifying in the event.
Fencing (2) Men’s Epee and Men’s Team Epee. First time Team USA will not qualify a competitor in men’s individual epee since 1908 (excludes 1980 boycott).
Team USA will qualify as the host country in these two events in LA28.
Field Hockey (1) Men’s Field Hockey. Last two times US men’s field hockey qualified were when the United States were the host country at the Summer Olympics (1984 and 1996).
The men should qualify for LA28 (currently ranked #24 in the world) but Field Hockey does mandate the host country needs to be a Top 25 team to get the auto qualifier spot for the Olympics.
Handball (2) Men’s and Women’s Team Handball. Last time Team USA qualified in these events when they hosted the Olympics in 1996. Like men’s team epee, like men’s field hockey, they will qualify as the host country in 2028.
Judo (11)
(Mixed Team, Men’s 60KG, Men’s 66KG, Men’s 81 KG, Men’s 100KG, Men’s 100KG+, Women’s 57KG, Women’s 63KG, Women’s 70KG, Women’s 78KG, Women’s 78KG+)
Mariah Holquin (Women’s 57KG), Hannah Martin (Women’s 63KG), Ari Berliner (Men’s 66KG), or David Terao (Men’s 60KG) are highest ranking Americans in terms of reallocation of quotas in case they get in that way and some athletes/nations do not accept their continental quota.
Mariah Holquin confirmed on Instagram she did not qualify for Paris 2024 and that only 4 members of Team USA qualified in Judo. If a spot does reallocated it would go to Holquin first but as Holquin mentions in post this looks highly unlikely and most American judokas will need to wait until LA28 when they are guaranteed a judoka in every weight class.
Sailing (1) Men’s Single Handed Dinghy: ILCA7. First time since 1924 Paris3 - Team USA has not qualified in single handed dinghy event
Shooting (2) Men’s 10m Air Pistol and MX Team Air Pistol
Nick Mowrer could be #1 on the reallocation spot for men’s 10m air pistol so a chance this could be reallocated when universality spots and final Olympic sports are sorted out.
Rhythmic Gymnastics (1) Group. After qualifying in back to back Olympics - Team USA did not qualify a Rhythmic Gymnastics Group. They will qualify in LA28 as the host Country
Rowing (2)
Men’s Quad Sculls: They lost with a very tight 3rd to Estonia at the Last Chance Regatta. Given finish at 2023 Worlds (#9- now top boat not qualified from there) and #3 at Last Chance Qualifier if there is reallocation they are number one boat up
Men’s LW Sculls. Sam Melvin and Cooper Tuckerman won trials but did not qualify at Last Chance Regatta. Men’s LW Sculls will not be in the program at LA28 games replaced by Coastal Rowing (beach sprint). This event debut at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics and Team USA has only qualified once in this event from 2008-2024 and that at Rio 2016 where they finished 5th (Team USA’s best finish ever in this event at an Olympics)
Table Tennis (2) Men’s Team and Mixed Doubles. They will qualify in all five table tennis events for the first time ever at LA28 as the host country.
Taekwondo (4) Due to World Taekwondo - countries limiting nations to only 4 competitors if they use continental qualification- Team USA was only eligible for four weight classes. They will not compete in Women’s 49KG, Women’s 76KG, Men’s 58KG, Men’s 68KG where in 3 of these 4 weight classes they just won medals at the recent PanAm championships
Weightlifting (5) Women’s 59KG, Women’s 81KG, Men’s 73KG, Men’s 89KG, Men’s 102KG
Weightlifting offers 5 events per gender but allow countries to enter 3 competitors. If you do the math that means 4 Weightlifting events- Team USA could have never entered. Note in Women’s 81KG Tokyo silver medalist Kate Vibert finished in the Top 10 in rankings but will not qualify for Paris 2024 due to the NOC cap of 3 athletes per gender. On the men’s side Nathan Damron is #3 in line for a reallocation spot in Men’s 89KG but he is likely to just miss out on any type of reallocation.
Wrestling (2) Men’s Greco-Roman (60KG, 67KG. 77KG)

Note: 3 sports that had 10 events: baseball, softball, and karate are not on program in Paris. 15 events will debut in Paris but mainly they were added as swaps within the sports. For example sailing added 3 events (Men’s and women’s formula kite and MX 470 but got rid of men’s heavyweight dinghy (finn) and men’s and women’s 470). Only sport climbing (the men’s and women’s speed competition) and breaking were added and Weightlifting was the only sport that lost events from Tokyo losing 4 weight classes.
Team USA could only qualify for six of ten weighlifting events due to weightlifting quotas.
Prior to 2008 Beijing - Team USA did not have to qualify in sailing events and the single handed dinghy event was an open event (Team USA only sent men).
